James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez will join forces for the film adaptation of "Battle Angel Alita."

The adaptation has been one of Cameron's big passion projects, which he has apparently been working to get off the ground for a whopping 15 years.

Rodriguez is slated to direct the film while Jon Landau, who has worked on many of Cameron's previous films, is set to produce "Battle Angel Alita." The script is being written by Laeta Kalogridis, who wrote Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island."

Cameron was expected to direct the film for years, but he is currently working on four sequels for "Avatar."

"'Battle Angel' is an incredibly rich and vibrant epic in the tradition of Jim Cameron's spectacular, character-driven films," said Rodriguez about working alongside the creator of "Avatar" according to the Hollywood Reporter. "Getting to work from Jim's terrific and visionary script while learning the cutting edge techniques he's pioneered is a master class in filmmaking. It's an honor to explore the world of 'Alita' along with Jim and Jon, whose films have impacted me for decades."

The film tells the story of a female cyborg that becomes a criminal-hunting bounty hunter when she is discovered in a trash yard by a scientist. The film is based on the manga series by Yukito Kishiro.

Rodriguez is best known for his work on "El Mariachi." The Texan-born filmmaker has also directed such films as "Spy Kids," "Machete" and the two "Sin City" movies. He is also known for his tremendous versatility, editing, shooting and writing his own films. He has also supervised visual effects on many of his movies and even composed scores for "Sin City," "Machete Kills, "Kill Bill: Vol. 2" and the "Spy Kids" movies.

Cameron is the mastermind behind the highest-grossing film of all time -- "Avatar." He also directed "Titanic," "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" and "Aliens."
