Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steel screenwriter David S. Goyer recently spoke with Comic Book Resources about the responsibility of telling a comic book story on the big screen and the possibility of connecting Christopher Nolan's Batman universe to Zack Snyder's Superman universe.

At a Los Angeles press day to promote the second season return of Da Vinci's Demons, which Goyer wrote for Starz, Goyer talked about fan reactions and how as a screenwriter you have to give fans "what they don't even know they want."

"I mean, being involved in some of these comic book movies and stuff like that, people say, 'well, this is what they should do,'" Goyer said. "And trust me, if we had just done exactly that I don't think the audiences would have been completely happy."

Goyer also reiterated what Demons star Tom Riley told the publication earlier, which is that writers, actors, studios and networks shouldn't put too much stock in fan responses.

"It's important to listen to the fan chatter, but you're really talking about a tiny, tiny, tiny portion of your audience that may not be representative of what your mainstream audience actually thinks or feels," he said.

Goyer, who said he wouldn't reveal any details about the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, tentatively titled Batman vs. Superman, but he did reminisce about the early stages of penning the 2013 blockbuster. He said he and Nolan talked about where Superman would exist and whether or not he should operate in the same universe already established in the Dark Knight films.

"Chris Nolan and I absolutely had discussions about that with regards to Superman or Batman and where he exists in the public consciousness and whether or not this was aligned with that or a betrayal of that or not."

Snyder and his stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams and Laurence Fishburne, are gearing up to begin principal photography next month in Michigan.

According to the Illinois Film Office Director Betsy Steinberg, the follow-up film, which is slated for a May 6, 2016 release date, will also be filming Kent Farm sequences outside of Yorkville on Route 126 later this fall, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Snyder and company used the Yorkville location for the Kent farm in Man of Steel and had planned on using the location in February. However, Warner Bros. decided to delay production by 10 months to give "filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story."
