ABC 'Selfie' TV Show: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Star Karen Gillan to Tackle Comedy In New Series Pilot
Fans of science-fiction, romantic comedies, and musicals, prepare yourself and your smartphones for the new ABC comedy Selfie, starring Doctor Who alum Karen Gillan, and Star Trek's John Cho. Selfie, is an inspired modern take on the 1964 classic film My Fair Lady, starring Audrey Hepburn.
Gillan can be considered new in to the world of comedy. Hopefully, Cho can teach her a thing or two since he is no stranger to it. Cho has starred in the Harold and Kumar film franchise, Ugly Betty, American Dad, and Identity Thief.
The main commonality between the two stars is that their careers stem from science-fiction.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Selfie is about Eliza Dooley (Gillan), a self obsessed 20-something, who is more concerned with interacting with social media than with the real world. That is until she suffers a very public and humiliating break-up which becomes the subject of a viral video. Suddenly, Eliza has more social media "followers" than she dreamed of, for all the wrong reasons. Eliza enlists help from a marketing expert at her job to repair her tarnished image.
Enter Cho's character Henry, who plays the self-assured and successful marketing expert who is not as addicted to social media as Eliza. As a challenge, he decides to re-market his coworker Eliza.
While the story sounds a little convoluted, perhaps creator Emily Kapnek, who has had success with her other hit show, Suburgatory, can make sense of it. No air date has been announced as of yet.
Comedy might be a new realm for Gillan, 26, but living in the U.S. is not. Because of Doctor Who, Gillan, a Scottish-born actress, has been living in the U.S. for over two years, the Daily Mail Online reported. Before the announcement of Selfie, Gillan has been working in Hollywood garnering a variety of roles in some big name projects coming out next month and this summer.
The Daily Mail Online and Cinema Blend reported Gillan is the newest cast member of the comedy series NTSF: SD: SUV. In April, Gillan will also be in the horror film Oculus, which she and her mother are both excited about; they are both horror fans. She will also be in a romantic comedy film, titled The List.
In addition, Gillan can be seen in the highly anticipated summer film Guardians of the Galaxy, which is part the Disney/Marvel phase-two film project. Gillan stated in an interview with Variety that playing the villain was fun.
Gillan, who has gone from from playing Amy Pond, The Doctor's companion, to working in U.S. films and TV, to tackling science-fiction and now comedic roles, will probably make great a companion with Cho in Selfie.
