'Shades of Blue' News: Trailer for Jennifer Lopez Cop Drama Released
The trailer for her new "Shades of Blue" police drama series provocatively shows Jennifer Lopez covering up evidence following the shooting of an unarmed black man.
According to the New York Daily News, after her partner accidentally shoots the victim, Lopez's Harlee Santos "immediately goes into cover-up mode and tampers with evidence" to make the shooting look justified. The newspaper added the man was shot after the officers mistook gunshots from a video game for the real thing.
As part of Lopez's plan, she also shoots her partner in his Kevlar vest. She then simply instructs him to breath, adding, "The truth is in the paperwork."
The NBC show, also starring "Goodfellas" star Ray Liotta, premieres on Jan. 7.
The explosive episode is sure to garner much attention and spark continued controversy, given the current climate between law enforcement and some minority communities. Thus far this year, there have 850 police reported shootings, at least 29 of them involving unarmed black victims.
All the mayhem has resulted in increased scrutiny of police shootings. It has also led to widespread protests across much of the country and largely caused the rise of such movements as Black Lives Matter.
Over the last several months, protests have broken out in Ferguson, Missouri; Cleveland, Ohio; and North Charleston, South Carolina, following the controversial police shootings of Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and Walter Scott, respectively.
In the Scott shooting, Michael William Slager was ultimately charged with murder. The officer was captured on video shooting an unarmed Scott in the back, following a confrontation in which the 50-year-old man had turned to run away. Slager fired at least eight shots at Scott and later could be seen planting evidence around the crime scene to make the shooting appear more justified.
Slager is now being held without bail and is expected to go trial in the coming months.
