Android vs iOS: Facebook Asking Staff To Ditch iPhone for Android Smartphones
Recent reports revealed that giant social media company Facebook has been asking and urging its staff to ditch their iPhone devices and shift towards using Android smartphones. The recent policy comes after reports of Android's dominance in the market.
Chris Cox, Facebook's chief product officer, said during a media briefing that he is pushing his staff to switch from using iOS to Android to gain more knowledge on how Facebook is being used, including the problems occurring when using Android smartphones, instead of just being exposed to one operating system.
"I am instructing my entire team to switch over to Android, just because when left to choose their own preferred devices, they will often choose an iPhone," Cox said in a statement as quoted by NeuroGadget.
Facebook's move is not for personal preferences but a strategy that would ensure a more hands-on experience of Facebook in Android devices. Cox revealed that the policy is to "report bugs and live in the same experience that a huge chunk of Facebook users go through on a day to day basis."
Meanwhile, despite Cox's statement saying that most people prefer to use iOS, recent reports, however, suggest that Android has been dominating the market in the second quarter of 2015, per IDC.
IDC reveals that Android has a total of 82.2 percent in market share while the iOS merely has 13.9 percent and has declined by 22.3 percent. But despite the decline in the market and in their amount of shipment (47.5 million), the popularity of the iPhone has greatly increased by 6.7 percent.
Meanwhile, Windows covers 2.6 percent of the market share while Blackberry OS is at 0.3 percent and others at 0.4 percent. The growth pattern, according to IDC, is due to gains experienced in emerging markets such as Asia/Pacific Excluding Japan (APEJ) and the Middle East and Africa (MEA).
Apparently, the number of shipments are slightly lower than expected and is slow this year. Furthermore, it could also be caused by China joining North America and Western Europe in a more mature growth pattern.
Meanwhile, Facebook has been in the headlines for their upcoming new projects including a satellite that they are planning to develop to reach more countries that are still uncovered and unexposed to the giant social media site.
Facebook previously announced its plans to reach 14 countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa as it partners up with Eutelsat Communications.
