The cult hit TV show from the 1990s "Mystery Science Theater 3000" is making a comeback, following a 15-year hiatus for the low-budget franchise.

According to Entertainment Weekly, news of the show's return came when original creator Joel Hodgson announced Tuesday that he had started a crowdfunding campaign to finance the new run.

The simplistic nature of the series gives it an easy financial target, allowing producers to work with a relatively low budget.

For those who did not watch the original series, the show follows a mad scientist, who kidnaps an unsuspecting man and launches him into space to perform devious experiments on his mind, testing the limits of human sanity.

But the only experiments that the scientist performed on the man involved forcing him to watch terrifically bad movies, or B-movies.

The kidnapped man serves as the host for the show, and he is joined in the theater by two robots who seem to come loaded with pop-culture enthusiasm. The show was formatted to appear like a movie theater, with the hosts sitting in the lower portion of the screen and the movie playing above. Over the course of the two-hour show, the three of them make comments about the movie.

Hodgson spoke with EW about the revival project.

"We've been talking about doing this for five years now, so it's taken a long long time to get it to happen," Hodgson said. "The crowdfunding is kind of this big gathering, and not only is it gathering the audience but it's also gathering together the people who want to get involved."

The crowdfund is titled "Bring Back MST3K" and has been launched on Kickstarter. The goal of the campaign is to raise $2 million dollars to bring the show back. In the 30 days since funding began, the campaign has raised a little over half of that amount.
