Samsung Gear VR: Virtual Reality Device Available for Pre-Order for $99
The consumer edition of the Samsung Gear VR virtual reality headset is now available for pre-order. The device will cost $99 and it will attach to a smartphone.
The Gear VR is Samsung and Oculus' virtual reality device that has been tested by developers since last year. Now, the consumer edition is available for pre-order through Best Buy for $99, Polygon reports.
The Gear VR will be compatible with Samsung's Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 phones, and comes with a 16 GB microSD card with "3D movie trailers and 360° videos." The unit allows the phone to be selected with a switch and then snapped right into it.
The virtual reality headset will use the smartphone's screen and processor to display virtual reality images through the headset to the user.
The consumer edition is actually quite light when worn on the head, compared to the developer edition. Samsung was said to have reduced the weight by 22 percent for the final consumer headset. The headset also has a comfortable form-fitting design with foam that touches the users' face.
Content from Netflix, Hulu, Twitch and Vimeo already can be streamed on the Gear VR. TiVo is also developing their content so that it can be shown through the Gear VR, The Verge reports. More content will be available in the future.
The Gear VR will follow the user's head motions with its internal sensors. This will make it feel more like virtual reality.
The Gear VR was first announced in September 2014. The first developer edition came out in December, followed by another one this March. Finally, the public version is available for pre-order.
When customers pre-order the Gear VR from Best Buy, they will be able to pick it up on Nov. 20.
