Justin Bieber vs One Direction: Who's Topping Album Sales Amid Similar Release Date?
Nov. 13 isn't just an ordinary day for Beliebers and Directioners because the day marks the release of the pop stars' much anticipated albums. As the British boy band and the Canadian crooner decided to release their new albums on the same day, people couldn't help but speculate: who among them will top the sales?
The competition between One Direction and Justin Bieber has gone intense. After being involved in a rivalry that Bieber stirred in September, when he allegedly dissed Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlison and Harry Styles, the moment of truth finally comes within days and the industry experts weigh in.
According to a lengthy analysis by Billboard, Bieber's "Purpose" and One Direction's "Made in the A.M." albums are currently "running neck-in-neck" as far as initial orders are concerned. It was shared by Alliance Entertainment Senior Vice President of Purchasing and Marketing, Laura Provenzano, whose company handles distributors like Kmart, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million, among thousand other stores.
Another music industry expert, Trans World rock and pop buyer Mark Hudson, told the publication that the competition is "too tough to call."
For the first week of the two album's release, it was projected that each of them will rack up 300,000 copies, excluding streaming and track equivalent albums.
While two of the sources say that the matchup is coming to a nip-and-tuck, others favor a camp that will seem to triumph in the long run.
Chris Brown, executive of 12-unit Bull Moose chain, speculated that the boy band has an edge and said that he is "feeling a little more hustle on behalf of One Direction than I am [on] the Bieber release" without any other elaboration on his end. Although, he wonders if One Direction's deluxe album price will be a factor.
Meanwhile, Newbury Comics head buyer, Carl Mello said that Biebs is the man on top for this one. He explained that even though One Direction has a bigger fan base as of today, "Purpose" have the potential to succeed because it has a single -- "What Do You Mean?" -- that has already become a huge hit.
Overall, because of Bieber's "momentum," which was driven from his recent hit, Billboard noted that the crooner will win the race in the long run.
