‘Pacific Rim 2’ Cast, Release Date & Updates: Guillermo del Toro And His Team Still Working On The Sequel
The 2013 giant-robots-and-monsters movie Pacific Rim grossed over $400 million in worldwide box office sales. As Cinemablend pointed out, films that manage to rake in this amount of cash usually get, or at least, deserve a sequel.
However, since the film's release, there have been no official announcements yet whether a sequel will be made, only rumors and hints from people involved in the first project.
According to an October 2013 interview with IGN, director Guillermo del Toro opened about the possibility of a Pacific Rim 2 with screenplay co-writer Travis Beacham. He said, "We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that's definitely above my pay rate."
Then, in the same month, del Toro sat down with Rolling Stone and said that he was already given the go-signal by Legendary Pictures, the studio behind Pacific Rim.
"Legendary gave me the absolute go-ahead with writing the screenplay, so Travis Beacham and I are working on it. As far as giving it a green light, that's the big step of the process," the director said.
He added, "We need to put together a budget and then they'll make that decision, but everybody is unwavering in their love for the movie."
Legendary Pictures' founder Thomas Tull joined in on the Pacific Rim 2 hype after meeting with del Toro on the set of his latest film with the studio, Crimson Peak.
When ShockTillYouDrop asked Tull about any update regarding the highly anticipated sequel earlier this month, he said, "I was literally just with Guillermo on the set of Crimson Peak. We talk about it and have some pretty great ideas. If they come to fruition and we get a great script, then we're open to it. Fans seem pretty passionate about it and working with Guillermo. So, we're open to it."
With the director, the screenplay writer and the studio head all on board for the second installment of Pacific Rim, is a sequel project currently on its way to the early stages of production?
