NFL: 10 Crazy Facts About the Last Time Detroit Lions Beat Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in 1991
The Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions have had their rivalry with one another dating all the way back to 1930. There's only one problem: It hasn't really been a "rivalry" lately. The Packers have won every single home game at Lambeau Field against the Lions dating back to 1991. That's 23 consecutive games!
To put this streak in perspective, let's take a trip down memory lane and feel what it was like the last time the Lions beat the Packers in Wisconsin.
1. The Buffalo Bills Were in the Super Bowl
The first of four in a row. Jim Kelly and the Buffalo Bills made it all the way to the Super Bowl but eventually lost to the New York Giants in one of the most dramatic finishes of all time. Scott Norwood missed the potential game-winning field goal as time expired. The Bills haven't made the playoffs in the 21st century.
2. George Bush Sr. Was President
That's a long time ago. Since the Lions defeated the Packers in December of 1991, we've gone through four different presidents in 24 years. Those presidents include George Bush Sr., Bill Clinton, George Bush Jr. and Barack Obama. The Lions better hurry up and win on the road because a new U.S. president is scheduled to take over soon.
3. Price of Gas
The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the United States was $1.14 in 1991. Since then the prices have soared and dropped constantly with no real consistency. Prices have been falling big time lately where the national average finds itself at around $2 per gallon.
4. Michael Jordan Won His First NBA Championship
In 1991 Michael Jordan was the best NBA player who hadn't yet won a championship. He would constantly lose to the Bad Boy Detroit Pistons in the playoffs, but he finally broke though in 1991. That year he led the Chicago Bulls to a Finals win over the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. Jordan and the Bulls would go on to win five more titles in the 1990s.
5. The U.S. National Debt Was (only) $3 Trillion
The U.S. economy has definitely put itself in a big financial hole since 1991. Then the national debt was only $3 trillion. Today we're at over $18 trillion in debt. You do the math. As a city, Detroit certainly hasn't looked financially stable since 1991. Maybe if the Lions could actually win in Green Bay, the economy would improve? Yes, this is all the Lions fault.
6. Brett Favre Was With the Atlanta Falcons
Not many people remember it, but Brett Favre began his career with the Atlanta Falcons. That didn't last long. After a year of disagreements and disappointment, he was traded to the Packers. There Favre would break almost every major career passing record and win a Super Bowl. No, the Lions never did beat Favre at Lambeau Field.
7. The Internet Goes Public
Thus, the new age was born. In 1991 the Internet was made publicly available. Almost everything today goes through the Internet whether it's social media, news or just entertainment. Think about that. The Last time the Lions won in Green Bay, the Internet went public.
8. MLB Banned Pete Rose
Pete Rose is probably the best baseball player of all-time banned from the Hall of Fame. Since then it's been a long battle, and Rose is still banned from all Major League Baseball operations. He is the all-time hit king, but gambling eventually did him in.
9. Magic Johnson Announces HIV Diagnosis
It was a sad day in the NBA. Los Angeles Lakers point guard Magic Johnson announced to the world that he had HIV, and he would retire. Now 24 years later, Johnson is still going strong. He participates frequently in many basketball charity events, and he is also part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
10. Cost of Super Bowl Ad was $800,000
In 1991 baseball was the most popular sport in the United States. The NFL was getting there, but it wasn't on top of the world yet. If your company wanted to place an add during the Super Bowl on the carrying network it would cost about $800,000. Today the Super Bowl is by far the most watched event of the year, regardless of sports. Want in on advertising? It will cost you $4.5 million for just 30 seconds.
