Steam Machines vs Windows PC: Gaming Performance Comparison
Surprising as it may sound, the real score between Windows PC and Steam machines proves that the former has more edge than the latter.
ArsTechnica was able to make a comparison of the two using the GeekBench 3 tool. Apparently, the Windows 10 OS dominated all of the categories for the Single Core Benchmarks. Windows 10 scored 2,666 against Steam OS's 2,497. The integer of both platforms also showed how Windows 10 dominated Steam with a score of 2,447 against 2,346. The FL Point of the two platforms recorded the highest difference; Windows 10 showed a significant score of 2,978 against Steam OS' 2,666 score. The memory of the two platforms is almost similar, but Windows 10 still took the edge with a score of 2,482 against 2,463 of the Steam OS.
For the Multi-Core Benchmark using the same GeekBench 3 tool, the Windows 10 still dominated, posting a score of 4,691 against Steam OS' 4,399 for its overall rating. The integer of the two platforms showed some tight competition at 4,595 for Windows 10 against Steam's 4,513. The FL Point of the two showed a significant difference; Windows 10 was able to get a high score of 5,801 against Steam's 5,196. The memory of the two platforms, despite being both powerful and relevant, still showed signs of difference. The Windows 10 PC took on the score of 2,665 against Steam's 2,581.
GameSpot, however, has one question that may turn the test results. Could it be that Steam OS' performance might be the superior one for Valve-developed games?
"Since the Source Engine Games we tested were on the older side, the frame rate performance wasn't the difference between 'playable' and 'unplayable' in any case even on maxed out setting," the news outlet noted. Based on the technical testing alone, you may be probably losing some significant amount of performance if you choose the Steam OS than that of the Windows 10 PC platform.
The website also doesn't recommend the Steam OS at the moment if you're after the graphical capacity of your own gaming platform.
"Steam on Windows currently has thousands of games that aren't on Steam OS - While Steam OS has no similar exclusives to offer to recommend it over Windows" ArsTechnica concludes.
Let us know what you think about the comparison? Are you willing to go through the Steam OS despite the comparison between the two?
