Julio Cesar Chavez Jr Next Fight: Freddie Roach, Mexican Boxing Star To Reunite in 2016?
Former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Freddie Roach could reunite when the Mexican boxer returns to action next year.
BoxingScene reported that Chavez is convinced that Roach is still the perfect trainer for him. He parted ways with Roach after he ended ties with Top Rank Promotions to ink a deal with Al Haymon.
Chavez hired Joe Goossen for his fight against Andrzej Fonfara in April, where he took a ninth-round loss. The Sinaloa, Mexico native ended ties with Goossen after the fight and hired Robert Garcia, who helped Chavez score a unanimous decision win against Marcos Reyes in July.
But despite winning against Reyes under Garcia, Chavez and his camp are still convinced that Roach is still the trainer who could bring the 29-year-old to the next level. In an interview with BoxingScene, the Hall of Fame trainer sounded open to reuniting with his former student.
"He was a great student," Roach said of Chavez. "I remember he came in to watch Pacquiao work out one day and he said 'I want you to train me.' And I said 'okay, can you do what we just did?' And he said 'well, I think you guys are a little bit crazy but I think I can.' Honestly that's what he said. And he did it for four fights."
Roach said that Chavez was on his way to superstardom, but showed lack of focus while training for his title defense against Sergio Martinez in September 2012. The veteran boxing coach said that Chavez did not train hard for the fight, which was the main reason why he took a unanimous decision loss to Martinez.
"But then the fifth fight, I don't know what went wrong," Roach continued. "I don't know if he was scared of the opponent or something in his head. The Sergio Martinez fight, he could have won that fight easily I thought, because he was too big and too strong for him. But he didn't show up. He only showed up for five days to train."
BoxingScene also reported last week that Chavez, who holds an impressive 49-2-1 record with 32 knockout victories, will watch the upcoming showdown between Miguel Cotto and Saul Alvarez on Saturday in Las Vegas. After the fight, Roach said that they will sit down to discuss the possible reunion.
