LG Stops Selling New Urbane Smartwatch Due to Hardware Issue
LG has stopped allowing customers to order the new Urbane Second Edition smartwatch just a week after it went on sale.
The Urbane Second Edition smartwatch is the first wearable of its kind to offer 4G LTE connectivity. Because of an unknown hardware issue reported by LG, the company will no longer sell the smartwatch, CNet reports.
LG is not saying if they will be making the device available again in the future once the issue has been resolved.
"Late in the quality assurance process for the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE, our engineers were made aware of a hardware issue which affects the day-to-day functionality of the device," the company said in a statement. "After further investigation, the decision was made to cancel the rollout of the Urbane 2nd Edition LTE due to the complicated nature of the issue."
"Whether the device will be available in the future will be decided at a later time," the statement continued. "For now, our top priority is to ensure that only products that meet our very specific quality standards are available for purchase."
LG cancelled the Urbane Second Edition after AT&T and Verizon made it available for preorder on Nov. 11. The carriers did not reveal what they plan to do after the cancellation.
The second edition was supposed to be LG's update to the original Urbane, which came out in May. The updated smartwatch looked more like a luxury watch than a smartwatch, and it had a 480 x 480 pixel resolution.
Perhaps the best feature of the Urbane Second Edition was its cellular connectivity directly from the watch. The watch would not have needed a handset nearby to make and receive calls, a first for Google Android Wear smartwatches.
Google has not responded to the cancellation announcement.
