‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2’ Opens up to $16 Million on Late Thursday Night Previews
In just a portion of a late night Thursday, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" has opened up in previews to an astronomical $16 million at the box office, with much more the following day on Friday.
According to Deadline, the final film in the franchise is still hot for the taking with fans swarming in to see the final battle between Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and President Snow (Donald Sutherland).
There is no doubt that the franchise finale is poised to break some records, but fans might be interested to know that the "Mockingjay Part 1" previews pulled in $17 million and the "Catching Fire" previews raked in about $25.5 million, which is considerably higher than this film has pulled in.
"Mockingjay Part 2" film is currently holding the No. 1 slot in 66 out of the 68 territories it is playing in.
Friday's debut pushed the film onto 4,175 screens in the U.S., which should bounce those numbers up quite rapidly once it is in every market for the States.
Midday reports on Friday said that the film was looking at a $47 million - $49 million haul, which could put it on par with a $104 million - $110 million weekend. This is still a fairly remarkable sum for any movie that has a theatrical debut, but not quite as high as its predecessors.
Compared to "Mockingjay Part 1," those numbers are a little under it's haul. It opened up to $55 million in its first day and $121.9 million in its first weekend, which was the same weekend last year.
In terms of production costs, "Mockingjay Part 2" was approximately $160 million, which is much higher than that of "Mockingjay Part 1" and "Catching Fire."
According to Box Office Mojo, "Part 1" pulled in a total domestic haul of $337 million, which is much lower than "Catching Fire's" $424 million and "The Hunger Games" $408 million. The top earning film in the franchise worldwide was "Catching Fire," which earned $865 million.
Altogether, the entire franchise has grossed more than $2.3 billion worldwide.
