Huawei Nexus 6P Review: Users Complaining About Poor Microphone Quality
After incriminating bend test videos and reports of spontaneous breakage surfaced online, the Huawei Nexus 6P is now being accused of having poor microphone quality.
Owners are reporting that their talk buddies are unable to hear them properly. This happens during normal voice calls as well as during VoIP calls. Some experience it only in loudspeaker mode while some in both loudspeaker and earpiece mode. The issue seems to be so prevalent that people on Google Forums, Reddit and Xda-Developers are having the same problem.
According to users who have tinkered with their Nexus 6P, the problem might be caused by handset's noise cancelation setup. Most modern-day smartphones have multiple microphones in order to screen and filter surrounding noise. Some users claim that covering the back microphone of the Nexus 6P fixes the issue. Meanwhile, some scoffed at the idea saying that it actually causes the problem.
As of the moment, a consensus hasn't been established, perhaps because several owners are experiencing the same issue but with different underlying causes.
For his part, Nicholas Fitchett of Android Police said that completely turning off noise cancellation through a root-level build.prop modification solved the problem for him.
"I turned off noise cancelling via build prop and it fixed it for me," he said. "This goes back to the nexus 5 and nexus 6 as well. I doubt its a hardware issue. Google really needs to enable a setting for this or use better software."
Online threads regarding the poor microphone quality of the Nexus 6P are still multiplying as we speak. Although, Google is aware of the issue and is currently investigating it further.
The first criticism the Nexus 6P received, since its release back in September, was that the handset was too brittle. A YouTube video by Jerry Rig showed the Nexus 6P undergoing a set of bend tests. Rig was heavily criticized for his procedures. Many viewers theorized that since Rig had already broken the handset's glass, its overall stability had long been diminished.
To prove the cynics wrong, Rig eventually posted another video, embedded below, showing him unboxing a brand-new Nexus 6P. Rig easily snapped the handset in two without exerting too much effort.
Not long after, owners on Reddit began complaining that the handset's rear glass panel was shattering by itself.
"This could be caused by the method they use to temper the glass," said Reddit user RedHeadedMenace. "The method used to temper Gorilla glass involves giving the glass ion baths to strengthen it. The strength comes at a cost though -- due to the strong attraction of the glass particles to one another and compression of the whole, the glass develops lines of internal torque and stress, leading to explosive results if the glass is impacted or pressed from the wrong angle."
