'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Star Terry Crews Too Old to Play Luke Cage in Upcoming Netflix, Marvel and Disney Online Series?
Terry Crews, star of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Expendables movies, is openly courting the role of Luke Cage, Marvel's flawed superhero.
At first, Crews was not willing, but now that the Cage project has been green-lit by Marvel and Netflix, Crews is saying, "Pick me!"
In the past, Crews's name has been linked to the project through industry rumors and fans' dream casting, which also included Idris Elba and Michael Jai White. But during that time, Crews did not like the idea of working against his aforementioned friends.
"Don't put me against my homeboy for a movie that's not existing," Crews said about the project at the time.
Today, Crews has changed his tune.
"I've been hearing stuff like, 'Oh, you're too old,' and I'm like, 'Man do my workout 20 years ago, and we'll talk about who's too old,'" Crews said according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Crews has stated that neither Marvel nor Netflix has contacted him since the show has been green-lit.
Not everyone agrees with the Crews as Luke Cage, however.
A writer with Entertainment Weekly discussed the dream casting for Cage and claimed that Crews is just a bit too old. He also said that The Rock is just too famous or busy; the writer recommends Boris Kodjoe instead.
Some still want Crews to play Cage, saying the actor is well-built, has the personality, physicality, and the successful reputation as a scene stealer in TV and films, movie blog MoviePilot reported.
When it was announced that Marvel would take Luke Cage to become a show on Netflix, fans were happy. Not only will Cage get a live-action series, but so will the rest of his superhero colleagues: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist.
Last month, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Netflix, and Marvel announced the project. Filming is expected to start in New York City this summer.
Luke Cage is the superhero story of Carl Lucas, who was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. In exchange for a reduced sentence, Carl Lucas volunteered for a clandestine prison experiment that was supposed to replicate the super soldier serum that created Captain America. After receiving it, he gained steel-hard skin. Later, Carl Lucas escaped prison, and created a brand new identity in Luke Cage. Luke Cage was one of the first African-American superheroes to star in a comic book series.
