World War 3 Brewing? Fears Grow as Russia-Turkey Tension Heightens
The news of thickening tension between Turkey and Russia has alarmed citizens of social media, resulting in speculations that World War III may possibly be on the rise.
On Tuesday, NBC News reported that World War III trended in Twitter when Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a fighter jet to be launched, to which Turkey downed for the reason that it entered the Turkish borders adjacent to Syria without any permission.
As social media users waited for the response of Russia after Turkey's attack, tweets regarding the impending war has abruptly increased. Adding fuel to the fire, people referenced what Pope Francis has said in Sept. 2014, that "a piecemeal World War III may have already begun."
Furthermore, the pope added on Sunday that Christmas is something that appears to be a "charade" because "the whole world is at war," given the tumultuous attacks that occurred rapidly since the Paris attacks.
While social media users were threatened due to the series of violence, thankfully, the Russian government did not fight eye for an eye. Instead, the Communist country called for an emergency meeting with United Nations Security Council in order to address the issue.
As per CNN, citizens should not fear for another World War coming because it's far from possible. The publication explained that if Russian-Turkish tension occurred during the Cold War, then Putin would have immediately dialed for nuclear codes against Turkey, but the conflict has been over for more than two decades.
Analysis from IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Center has also busted fears that an outright war is coming near.
"The immediate implication of the shooting down of the aircraft is likely to remain limited to a diplomatic crisis," IHS Jane said.
While experts claim that everybody should calm down amid war scare, the center has stated that further incidents between Russia and Turkey "are highly likely" since neither of the countries is "willing or able to back down."
"Do they want to have NATO serve ISIS? I understand that every state has regional interests, and we respect that, but we would never tolerate crime like today's," Putin said, referring to the NATO-member country.
To explain Russia's side, the government denied that its warplane has entered the Turkish borders without any permission. Meanwhile, Turkey came into defense and said that they have warned the aircraft for 10 times before they shot it down.
