NFL Thanksgiving Game Previews: A Look at Lions, Panthers & Packers
The Thanksgiving Day NFL action starts at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time and features three games, ending with a prime-time matchup between the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers.
The first game of the day features two struggling teams, the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles. The Lions are just 3-7, but have won their last two games. The Eagles were dominated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week and are 4-6. The Eagles actually still have a shot at winning the NFC East because the other teams in the division have performed so poorly.
The Eagles will either start Sam Bradford or Mark Sanchez Thursday. Bradford is still ailing from a shoulder injury and concussion he sustained in Week 10. Sanchez had to start Sunday in the 45-17 loss to the Buccaneers. The Eagles will focus on pressuring Lions' quarterback and defending receiver Calvin Johnson. The Lions running game is not much of a threat.
The Lions hope to continue their momentum after an upset over the Packers in Week 10 and a hard fought victory over the Oakland Raiders Sunday. The Lions need to keep Eagles' running back DeMarco Murray from having a big game in order to win.
Predicition: The Eagles have struggled mightily this year. Murray is only averaging 3.7 yards per carry with his new team and the defense has been disappointing. The Lions are on a roll and have been able to limit the run in the last two weeks. The Lions will win this one 24-20.
The second game on Thanksgiving features the undefeated Carolina Panthers taking on the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys finally got quarterback Tony Romo back, and he helped them finally get a win Sunday after seven straight losses. With Romo, the Cowboys have hope of making a turn around and competing in the NFC East.
The Panthers continue their undefeated season after destroying the Washington Redskins 44-16 on Sunday. Quarterback Cam Newton is having the best year of his career and is in the run for an MVP award. The team has had some close calls, including an overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8, but the team has performed well on defense all year.
Prediction: The Panthers will keep rolling and Newton will have another big game. The Cowboys will keep it close, but Romo will not be able to end the Panthers' streak. The Panthers win 31-28.
The prime-time game has the Chicago Bears traveling to Green Bay to take on the Packers on a very special night for Green Bay fans. At halftime of the game, the Packers will officially retire former quarterback Brett Favre's number and display his name in the Ring of Honor next to other Packer legends.
The Packers started the season at 6-0, before dropping three straight. The team had a crucial win against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The Packers are now 7-3 and tied with the Vikings for first in the NFC North. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has looked a little off and has not been on the same page with his receivers at times this season.
The Bears have looked better this year with a new offensive coordinator. The team is just 4-6, but they had a big win over the St. Louis Rams in week 10 and barely lost to the Denver Broncos Sunday. Quarterback Jay Cutler has been better with the new offense, turning the ball over less and completing quick passes.
Prediction: The Packers will use the momentum of their big victory over the Vikings and take down the Bears. The Packers are favored by at least 8 points by most sportsbooks, but they might have trouble covering that point spread. The Packers will win 27-21.
