Latin Show 'Narcos' Among Most Watched Shows on Netflix
Latino media continues to thrive in the mainstream, as "Narcos" becomes Netflix's most popular show.
A recent study by Screen Daily, which looked at ratings for streaming services, showed that "Narcos" was one of the top shows watched. While "Game of Thrones" was the most viewed, Netflix's "Narcos" had a huge presence and outranked many of HBO's original series and all of Netflix's other offerings.
Other shows by Netflix still performed well, with "Orange is the New Black" on top in the United Kingdom, but "House of Cards" did not make the top five, yet held its own.
The success of "Narcos" is no surprise, as buzz for the show has been huge ever since it premiered. While many Colombians were upset over the casting of a Brazilian actor for the role of Pablo Escobar, the media gave attention to the issue, and the story brought a larger audience to the show by generating curiosity.
Additionally, Netflix made sure to give the show a huge marketing campaign, which included billboards all over major cities.
While Netflix thrives with its original content, the landscape has recently become even more competitive. Amazon continues to produce original shows and is beginning to compete for audiences.
For example, both Netflix's "Jessica Jones" and Amazon's "The Man In The High Castle" were released on the same day, drawing viewers away from cable television. While Amazon has yet to score huge ratings from its shows "Hand of God" or "Mozart in the Jungle," "Man in the High Castle" has already spurred controversy and is likely to draw audiences in. Additionally, Amazon is currently producing the second season of the Emmy Award-winning "Transparent."
Both companies are also producing original movies. Netflix has only released one and Amazon will release its first on Dec..4, so it will be interesting to see how these films perform.
"Narcos" tells the story of Pablo Escobar and an American FBI agent who is hunting the famous drug lord down. The first season is available in full on Netflix. The show stars Boyd Holbrook and Wagner Moura. A second season is due out in the near future.
