Gina Rodriguez, Natalie Portman to Star in 'Annihilation'
Gina Rodriguez could be starring alongside Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman in an upcoming movie.
The film in question is Alex Garland's "Ex Machina" follow-up "Annihilation." The new movie is based on the first part of Jeff VanderMeer's "Southern Reach" trilogy.
The report, by Coming Soon, did not reveal what Rodriguez would be playing in the film. Portman was cast back in May and will take on the lead role.
The film centers on a team of four (which includes an anthropologist, a psychologist, a biologist and a surveyor) that heads to a location called Area X. They are disconnected from the rest of society and must deal with internal and external demons to complete their mission.
The rights for the trilogy were acquired in 2014 by Paramount Pictures and producer Scott Rudin. "Annihilation" is the first in the series and is followed by "Authority" and "Acceptance."
Rodriguez is best known for her work on "Jane the Virgin." The actress recently signed a deal to be represented by 42West; co-star Andrea Navedo also signed the same deal with the publicity company. Rodriguez, a Chicago native, won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical for her work on "Jane the Virgin." She also won an ALMA Award in 2013 for her work on "Filly Brown" and has won two Imagen Foundation Awards for her work on both "Filly Brown" and "Jane the Virgin."
"Annihilation" will also star Frances McDormand.
"Ex Machina" was Garland's directorial debut and the film scored tremendous reviews, with many particularly fond of the work by Alicia Vikander in the lead role. Prior to directing the film, Garland was a well-known writer, penning such scripts as "Dredd," "Never Let Me Go," "Sunshine," "28 Days Later" and "The Beach." He also wrote the script for the rumored "Halo" movie and is writing the adaptation for "Annihilation."
