Santa Monica College Shooting Leaves 5 Dead, Including Gunman
Five people are dead after a shooting near the library of Santa Monica College on Friday. The gunman has been pronounced dead, killed by police near the college library. The gunman killed two people in a house nearby before setting that building on fire. He hijacked a car, firing indiscriminately, killing one man in an SUV, before getting out at the college and continuing the rampage, killing another woman on campus before reaching the library.
"The officers came in and directly engaged the suspect and he was shot and killed on the scene," Seabrooks said. "The information we have indicates, at this point, that as many as half a dozen victims were shot and killed and several more were injured." Those initial estimates were revised down to five dead, including the gunman.
After the house fire, it is believed that the gunman, an unnamed male between 25 and 30, then took aim at random people along Pico Boulevard, ending in his final shootout with police near the college's library. The attack seemed to take place out of nowhere, and so far witnesses have not given any indication that something set the man off.
"It seemed like he was alone in his car," a witness said, recounting that he took cover under the dashboard of his own car, which was struck by gunfire. "I saw him jumping out of the car. He had a big, black gun in his hand and he just started blasting maybe 10 rounds from the left to the right."
"This guy just stepped out with a big rifle," bus passenger and student Marta Fagerstroem said. "Everyone threw themselves on the floor, screams. The bus driver, she panicked. She couldn't drive away. She was able to, after a while."
Eventually the shooter was gunned down by police officers on the campus of Santa Monica College. Though the shooting finished at that location, authorities do not currently believe it was intended to be a school shooting, and rather, the gunman ended up at the college by chance.
