Apple MacBook Air: Apple to Stop Offering 11-Inch MacBook Airs, Create 15-Inch Model?
Apple might discontinue its 11-inch MacBook Air models and start offering a brand new 15-inch model. This would be the first time that the ultra-light laptops are offered in a 15-inch size.
Apple would shift its focus from the 11-inch MacBook Air to the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro, Tech Radar reports.
Rumors from the Chinese news site Economic Daily News say that Apple will discontinue the 11-inch MacBook Air, but it will keep the 13-inch models. This could mean a 15-inch model is ready to be added to the lineup to take the spot of the 11-inch model.
The new MacBook Air models that come out are rumored to have Intel Skylake processors, Retina displays, new battery packs and cooling modules.
Currently, Apple offers two MacBook Air models that both come standard with a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 processor, Intel HD Graphics 6000, 4GB of memory and an 128GB solid state drive. The 11-inch model starts at $899, and the 13-inch model starts at $999.
The resolution on the 13-inch model is 1,400 x 900 pixels, and the 11-inch resolution is 1,366 x 768 pixels.
If the new MacBook Air models all end up using Retina displays, the 15-inch model would have a resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 pixels, and the 13.3-inch model would have a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels.
Apple has said the iPad Pro is a capable device that can replace a small laptop. The small 11-inch MacBook Air could be a competitor with the iPad Pro. Apple would likely rather focus on its brand new iPad Pro than the older MacBook Air.
A 15-inch screen could give way to a whole new group of customers. These customers prefer bigger screens but do not need the power and premium features of the MacBook Pro. The MacBook Air is also slightly lighter than the MacBook Pro.
