Helen Mirren Slams Donald Trump at Gotham Awards
Actress Helen Mirren slammed Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump during her appearance at the Gotham Awards ceremony.
According to Variety, the longtime fan favorite actress, who has a lot of pull in Hollywood these days, took to the stage to receive a career tribute at the event. Her charismatic demeanor and demanding presence gave her the momentum to really come out with her guns blazing.
Her first line when she got in front of the microphone was, "I have to tell you a story about f*cking the queen."
Of course, that intro got everyone's immediate attention, and the crowd did not turn away for one single moment, reacting proportionally with all of Mirren's comments.
She began her monologue with a poignant introduction about the power of words and how they convey emotions. Those emotions included love, hate and stupidity, which she quickly followed up with Trump's name.
Mirren echoed a sentiment from Rosie Perez, who got the anti-Trump bandwagon going early on in the ceremony.
That was the only moment of her speech that Mirren used to slam Trump, but the crowd followed her ensuing story closely and gave her due applause.
"When 'The Queen' was first screened at Venice, I'd never seen it before, and neither had my husband Taylor," Mirren said. "In the first scene I'm in the full regalia, and I turn and look at the camera and there's silence in the cinema. And my husband lets out this huge laugh. So I lean over to him and say, 'Darling, do you think you'll ever f*ck me again?'"
This got a stirring laugh from the audience, as well as applause. Mirren went on to support writers for the power of their words. It is their words, the actress concluded, that really strengthen the unique power of cinema and many other forms of artistic entertainment.
