The next iPhone may come without a headphone jack.

Apple wants the next device in the series to be extremely thin. To do this, the company might be planning to get rid of the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack that all the previous iPhones have had.

Apple plans to make the next iPhone 1mm thinner than the current models and use a Lightning port instead of the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, Cult of Mac reports.

While rumors of the switch have circulated for a little while now, a Japanese blog recently brought new attention to the matter.

Apple already uses a similar port to plug in charging cables. Since there would be a Lightning port for the headphones too, there either could be two Lightning ports or a dual-purpose single port for headphones and charging cables.

Headphone makers would have to create brand new headphones to adapt to the special Lightning port because traditional headphone cables would no longer fit. It could mean major changes for those audio companies if Apple decides to switch things up with the newest device.

This would be the biggest change for Apple since the company changed from the 30-pin connector in the iPhone 4s and below to the Lightning connector for the iPhone 5 and beyond. This change did not affect headphones though, and any old set of headphones from previous phones continued to work on new devices and vice versa.

If Apple decides to use just a single Lightning port for both the headphone jack and the charging port, it would mean that the only way to listen to music while the phone is charging would be with a set of Bluetooth headphones.

Apple needs to be sure that making such a big change is worth the potential trouble and complaints just to make their phones thinner. This could be a disaster for the company if they go through with it.
