BlackBerry Priv, the first Android smartphone in the renowned company's lineup, is set to mark a lot of firsts with their newest handset. This time, BlackBerry introduces the first software update for the high-end device, delivering on their promise of monthly security updates for the OS. As expected, the patch focused on security as well as enhancing several other features to the Android phone.

According to a blog post on the official BlackBerry website, the release offered "productivity and security improvements" in the 475MB update. Once again, the company highlighted their edge in privacy and security with enhancements on that end to protect users against the latest Android threats in the community.

Other upgrades include improved performance and improved stability. The camera has also been updated to increase the speed of the camera application and equipped it to cope better in low-light situations.

The maintenance update will be coursed through the Priv units bought through Shop BlackBerry first on Dec. 1, while the rest of the carrier-purchased versions will get the patch starting on Dec. 7. Updates are offered for free and can be downloaded in the background while owners continue to use the Priv.

BlackBerry is working overtime and it shows with more updates on the way in the various BlackBerry's Android applications. BlackBerry Keyboard will be getting more language support and fun emojis, BlackBerry Camera is up to get support for 16:9 images, BlackBerry Hub is set to include WhatsApp, and DTEK by BlackBerry will be offering more notification options to users.

A report from Venture Beat revealed that the update will not include the Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade, which fans have been looking forward to in Android smartphones. While the BlackBerry team has said that the work on bringing the newest mobile OS to the Priv has already begun, there have been no timeline or specific plans that have been revealed.

Other than the new flagship BlackBerry Priv, other handsets are looking to improve the company's performance in the market. According to a report from Sam Mobile, a new BlackBerry unit was recently spotted on GFXBench, testing the Samsung-made Exynos 7420 64-bit octa-core processor clocked at 2.1GHz.

This processor is considered to be one of the best chipsets in circulation, so it could mean good things for the BlackBerry device labelled as code number STV100-1. Running on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, the new BlackBerry smartphone is also reported to feature a 5.1-inch touchscreen with 2560 x 1440 resolution, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 16-megapixel rear camera and a five-megapixel front snapper.
