Ricky Martin Endorses Hillary Clinton for 2016 Presidential Campaign
Latin music superstar Ricky Martin announced on Wednesday his endorsement of democratic candidate Hillary Clinton for president.
The Puerto Rican musician made his endorsement on Twitter and called for fans to do the same by texting.
"Proud to announce my support for @HillaryClinton, a Latina at heart. Text RICKY to 47246 to become a part of this historic campaign," Martin tweeted.
According to BuzzFeed News, Martin will be helping the Clinton campaign get the Latino vote. His endorsement coincides with an event Clinton organized in Florida on Dec. 2 aimed at getting support from the Puerto Rican community in the state.
"Our community has been continuously attacked by Donald Trump and other Republican presidential candidates," Martin said. "A few months ago I raised my voice against Trump's hateful rhetoric and standing with me was Hillary Clinton. Time after time, Hillary has shown her commitment to the Latino community and that is why I'm proud to support her and to stand with her because ella está con nosotros y nuestras familias (she is with us and our families)."
Besides showing his support for Clinton, Martin will be helping the Clinton campaign with spreading the word about their SMS texting program.
The program already has thousands of Latino voters signed up. By posting information about the program on his social media accounts, Martin can get more members of the Latino community to become a part of it.
Martin is the latest Puerto Rican to show his support for Clinton. Marc Anthony, who has also been critical of Republican candidate Donald Trump, had the White House hopeful join him onstage at one of his sold out concerts at the American Airlines Arena in Miami on Oct. 2, reported Billboard.
"This is like family," Anthony said before bringing Clinton on stage. "I want to recognize someone who came to the concert tonight. Please, with all the respect in the world, let's hear it for Hillary Clinton."
While Trump has alienated Latinos, Clinton has used her campaign to show her support for the Latino community.
The democratic candidate has done this not just with her recently announced $275 billion infrastructure plan, which benefits Latinos, but also with her own campaign staff, which includes several Latinos.
Her staff includes Xochitl Hinojosa, the director of Coalition Press; Latino outreach director Lorella Praeli; Amanda Renteria, the national political director; Matt Ortega, the digital communications director; and Rebecca Leal, the deputy national finance director, among others.
