‘Star Wars Battlefront’ Exec Defends Game Amidst Talk of Underperformance, Long-Term Success Still Projected
With much hype comes much responsibility. "Star Wars Battlefront" was amped up to be the biggest game of the year, and the verdict has been mixed about the shooter title. In this week's Credit Suisse Technology, Media and Telecom conference, EA's CEO Peter Moore spoke up about the projected success of "Star Wars Battlefront" and some of details of the game that led to its overall design.
According to a report from GameSpot, Moore confirmed the company is still set to ship 13 million copies of "Star Wars Battlefront" in the current fiscal year.
The need to reiterate EA's goals in sales follow GameStop executives' comments about the "Star Wars" title's underperformance, an earlier report from GameSpot revealed. While GameStop President Tony Bartel did add that EA will likely rebound as the hype for the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" increase, Moore refuted the alleged dwindling sales, saying the team believes that there is "no weakness" in that front.
"The comments were interesting and a little bit of a surprise to us," Moore said when asked about the GameStop statement. "From our perspective, I'm here to reaffirm our guidance of 13 million units sold in for the fiscal year. There is no weakness that is perceptible yet in the title."
"I want everybody to understand that based on where we think this title is and the marketing beats ahead of us, in particular the movie launch over the next two weeks, we feel very comfortable that we're going to hit the guidance that we've given," he continued.
EA Games has had a lot of experience in handling high-profile games and the team believe "Star Wars Battlefront" is a game that could match the longevity of the hailed "Battlefront 4." The latter initially struggled with bugs, but found its footing and still enjoys millions of players every day, Moore pointed out in another GameSpot report.
"As the game ["Battlefront 4" has stabilized and as more content has become available, game sales have picked up and it is a very important part of our portfolio," he explained. "I believe the same thing will happen with 'Star Wars Battlefront'. Twelve months from now we'll be sat here and we'll be looking at the expansion packs we'll deliver as part of that season pass having maintained and increased engagement and as a result, having sold more games."
With the first of many DLC packs out and the film set to make major waves in a few weeks, Moore is confident in the future of "Battlefront" saying, "There's a lot of beats to this particular title and it will have an incredibly long tail."
