Colin Kaepernick or Robert Griffin: Which Possible NFL Free Agent Is Worth Signing?
Neither the San Francisco 49ers nor Washington Redskins have a winning record this year, and they both have huge question marks regarding the quarterback situation this offseason. Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin have each been benched this year because of poor play, and many NFL experts believe both will become free agents this offseason.
So which quarterback is a better option going forward?
Choosing Colin Kaepernick
It was a fun ride, but it's over. More than likely the 49ers are going to release Kaepernick from the roster this offseason and save over $100 million. Kaepernick may have signed a huge contract "potentially" worth $126 million, but that's only if he's the full time starter, and if he can guide the 49ers to the Super Bowl. That's not happening.
Now 28 years old, Kaepernick's career hangs in the air. He still has mobility as he holds the record for most rushing yards in a game by a quarterback in NFL history. With Kaepernick, you will have to adjust your entire offense like we saw Jim Harbaugh do. Kaepernick has proven he can lead a team to the Super Bowl if you build a great defense around him with quality receivers. Although Kaepernick is out for the year with a shoulder injury, Griffin has been plagued with injuries dating back to his college days at Baylor. Griffin has also had numerous altercations with both of his NFL head coaches, so it's fair to say he is the bigger risk.
Kaepernick obviously isn't the most accurate passer, but then again, Griffin won't be mistaken for Dan Marino anytime soon either. Not only does Kaepernick have a much better record in the regular season and postseason, but he stands two inches taller.
Choosing Robert Griffin
Sometimes the bigger risk pays off. Griffin is a former No. 2 overall draft pick who previously won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Sure, he has struggled with the Redskins, but who hasn't in the 21st century? The Redskins can retain Griffin next season for the team option $16 million, but that doesn't appear likely at all considering his relationship with Jay Gruden.
Griffin is also three years younger than Kaepernick.
Kaepernick has indeed won more playoff games, but we have to keep things in perspective. Kaepernick was surrounded with top quality talent like Anquan Boldin and Vernon Davis to throw to and has also had an elite defense behind his back, and let's also not forget they were in the NFC Championship game with Alex Smith before Kaepernick was even named the starter. You could easily make the case that Griffin has done more with less.
Both quarterbacks have their positives and negatives. Both are young, energetic and mobile quarterbacks who can extend plays for more yards. They also have their flaws as both quarterbacks have dealt with injuries, and neither one is a very accurate thrower.
In the end it's up to you. Vote in our fan poll on which quarterback you would rather choose moving forward.
