'Star Trek Beyond' Release Date, News: Trailer to Premiere Ahead of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'
The first trailer for "Star Trek Beyond" will premiere during screenings of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
While many distributors have been reluctant to release films before and on Dec. 18 to avoid competition with "Star Wars," they are now fighting for a spot to premiere their trailers before the film.
Paramount has become one of the lucky distributors with the chance to show a clip of "Star Trek Beyond" ahead of its galactic rival. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is not much of a surprise, considering the fact that J.J. Abrams, director of the latest "Star Wars" film, produced the latest entry in "Star Trek" and directed the reboot of the franchise back in 2009.
Abrams directed the first two films, "Star Trek" and "Star Trek: Into Darkness," which received critical acclaim and Oscar nominations. Abrams was also originally tapped to direct the third installment, but opted out in order to direct "Star Wars."
It comes as no surprise that distributors want to premiere trailers in front of the biggest film of the year. With a movie that could potentially break records, studios want to make sure they get enough exposure to their targeted audience.
Additionally, after a number of flops in the past two years, such as "Fantastic Four," "Pan," and "Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," studios may want to avoid these sort of disasters.
Next year is already crowded, filled with many blockbusters, including the awaited "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," "The Huntsman's Winter War," "X-Men: Apocalypse," "Captain Marvel: Civil War" and "Independence Day: Resurgence." Others that will likely want a trailer are "Allegiant: Part 1," "The Jungle Book," "Alice through the Looking Glass" and "Finding Dory."
Some tentpoles that will most likely not have footage ready for the opening of "Star Wars" are "Doctor Strange" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Half Shell."
"Star Trek Beyond" is one of the most anticipated films of next year and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban. The film is expected for release on July 22.
