MLB: New York Yankees Acquire Starlin Castro From Chicago Cubs
The New York Yankees have acquired infielder Starlin Castro from the Chicago Cubs, trading away right-handed reliever Adam Warren and utility player Brendan Ryan, as reported by Yahoo! Sports. The move made sense for both teams as they try to improve their roster.
Castro is slated to play second base for the Yankees despite coming off a disappointing season, where he just hit .265 with 11 home runs and 69 RBIs. He rebounded towards the end of the season with a .353 batting average in 143 plate appearance after being benched in August, per Baseball Reference.
The 25-year-old used to play shortstop when he started with the Cubs, but he was very prone to a lot of errors and lapses, which made Chicago move him to second base when Addison Russell was promoted to the majors. The Yankees have defensive shortstop DiDi Gregorius so Castro is a lock at second with Rob Refsnyder and Dustin Ackley as backups.

The Cubs signed free agent utility man Ben Zobrist to a four-year, $56 million before the trade was announced. USA Today noted that it blindsided the New York Mets and Washington Nationals, who were the favorites to land the 34-year-old.
Zobrist wanted to play second base and Chicago is willing to let him as evident on the Castro trade. He previously played for current Cubs manager Joe Maddon while he was with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Cubs got a possible spot starter in Warren, but he is more effective as a reliever.
He had a 2.29 ERA last season with the Yankees in 35.1 innings while posting a 3.66 ERA as a starter. Chicago will surely use him as a starter at the start of the season, and if he struggles, they can easily put him in the bullpen.
As for the 33-year-old Ryan, he is a great defender that can play multiple positions but is a bad hitter with a career .234 batting average. Maddon will likely use him as a defensive replacement at the end of games.
Chicago still has 23-year-old second baseman Javier Baez on their roster and they could trade him for more pitching help, per MLB Daily Dish. Tampa Bay is a possible destination for Baez as the Rays are admirers of the player and were involved in trade discussions that did not materialize at the July trade deadline.
Some of the pitchers that the Cubs are considering from the Rays are starters Alex Cobb, Matt Moore and Jake Odorizzi along with relievers Brad Boxberger and Jake McGee.
