'Tarzan' News: First Photos Released for Live-Action Movie
Tarzan is swinging his way back into theaters. Warner Bros. has just released the first photos from the forthcoming film "The Legend of Tarzan."
The live-action film, which is slated to hit theaters on July 1, stars Alexander Skarsgård ("True Blood") in the titular role and Margot Robbie ("Suicide Squad") as Jane.
The photos were published exclusively by USA Today. One shot features a noticeably buff and shirtless Skarsgård by himself in the jungle. A second photo features Robbie and Skarsgård in a back-to-front embrace.
To get himself Tarzan ready, Skarsgård spent four months rigorously training before production started.
"I basically didn't see my family or my friends," he said, though he added that the part "was definitely worth getting up at 4:30 in the morning."
Skarsgård also teamed up with choreographer Wayne McGregor to get a handle on Tarzan's movements and posture.
The actor said, "He works mostly with the best contemporary ballet dancers in the world, so it was quite unusual for him to work with somebody like me who can't touch their toes."
Fans have been anxiously awaiting this remake, but "Legend of Tarzan" isn't the heartwarming story that the public has come to know and love through the years.
The movie begins with Tarzan already having left his home in the jungle and living in Victorian London with his wife. He soon receives an invitation to return as an emissary of Parliament and makes the decision to return to the Congo.
"It's almost the opposite of the classic tale, where it's about taming the beast," Skarsgård told USA Today. "This is about a man who's holding back and slowly as you peel off the layers, he reverts back to a more animalistic state and lets that side of his personality out."
"Legend of Tarzan" also stars Christoph Waltz as the Belgian antagonist Captain Leon Rom, Djimon Hounsou as Chief Mbonga, and Samuel L. Jackson as George Washington Williams.
