David Letterman Retiring: Could Chelsea Handler Become The Next Late Night Star?
It pays to sleep with a network television president: Chelsea Handler's E! show will be ending in nine months, and there's talks that she's up for another high-profile gig -- filling the slot left open by David Letterman when he retires from CBS's The Late Show in nine months!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Handler's manager -- high-profile agent Irving Azoff -- confirmed that she will be leaving her eponymous E! TV show when her contract expires in nine months. Azoff claims that the reason Chelsea is letting her contract run out is because she's unhappy with the "politics" going on at E!, and she's looking to get something a lot more high profile than a cable television show. "Chelsea intends to leave when her contract expires. She hired me to figure out her life after E! We have at least seven suitors and many ideas," said Azoff, who added that some of the offers she's entertaining include a radio show and a late-night show on an Internet platform.
But according to Perez Hilton, the biggest high-profile offer that has been made to Chelsea thus far is filling the chair left empty by David Letterman on CBS. Initially, when Chelsea first approached the network for a show, she was shot down, and offered Craig Ferguson's 12:30 a.m. slot as a possibility. However, when Letterman announced his retirement a few days ago, Chelsea's name was entered into discussion to fill his slot.
However, don't count Chelsea as a shoo-in just yet: according to his contract, Craig Ferguson has the right of first refusal for Letterman's slot. If Ferguson takes the offer, all other possibilities -- Chelsea included -- go out the window.
An E! spokesperson stated to The Hollywood Reporter: "Chelsea has nine months left on her contract and E! will not comment on the future of Chelsea Lately at this time."
