Ahead of the NPD Group's official financial report for November 2015, Sony has announced that the PlayStation 4 was the month's best-selling console in the U.S. Sony's gaming device has regained its usual standing after its second place finish to the Xbox One in October.

In a statement sent to VentureBeat, Sony marketing boss Eric Lempel said that the PlayStation 4 grabbed several milestones in November, which propelled it to the top of the console charts for the month. Coming into Black Friday, Sony had already sold more than 30 million PlayStation 4 units around the world. Sales skyrocketed even further during the long Thanksgiving weekend.

Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House revealed in a recent interview with FinancialReview that PlayStation enjoyed its biggest Black Friday ever.

"We've just seen the most successful Black Friday in the company's history," said the executive. "Rumors of the demise of the console have been greatly exaggerated."

Microsoft also announced this week that it had an impressive Black Friday sales, though not enough to outpace Sony. In its statement to GameSpot, the Washington tech giant stated that November 2015 was the best November for Xbox One in the U.S. The company did not share specific numbers, but it did say the console set new records for hardware sales, game sales and Xbox Live engagements.

It can be remembered Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox One going into Black Friday. The "Gears of War" and "Rise of the Tomb Raider" bundles were both offered at a $50 discount. That said, the move wasn't enough to lure gamers in picking the Xbox One over the PlayStation 4. The Xbox One-exclusive "Tomb Raider" didn't even make it to the top ten for software sales.

Both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were priced at $300 from Black Friday all the way to Cyber Monday. Due to the soaring demand for the discounted consoles, both companies recently announced they were extending their promos. Sony's PlayStation 4 price cut will end on Dec. 19 while Microsoft will restore the Xbox One's price to $350 on Dec. 26.

Where it currently stands, the PS4 is poised to remain atop the console charts for a couple of months more. This is because 2016 appears to be a big year for Sony with the release of the highly-anticipated PlayStation 4-exclusive "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" as well as a collection of new software upgrades.

Despite Sony not having plans for PS3 backwards compatibility, it did announce PlayStation 2 emulation on the PlayStation 4. Read full story here. Only time will tell if the feature can widen Sony's lead over Microsoft.
