Philadelphia Building Collapse Inspector Commits Suicide In Wake Of Tragedy
The tragedy of last week's building collapse in Philadelphia is still fresh in the minds of many who live in the city of brotherly love. At 9 p.m. last night, the collapse claimed yet another victim.
Ronald Wagenhoffer, a veteran inspector who had surveyed the building just prior to its collapse, was found dead Wednesday evening of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. It is speculated that he killed himself due to the grief of his perceived role in the building's collapse.
"We're a city in deep and profound mourning. With the building collapse a week ago we have now lost seven lives with this tragedy," Deputy Mayor Everett Gillison said today. "We're still burying people from last week, now we have to bury someone from today."
Wagenhoffer, 52, had been an employee of the city for 16 years and was well-respected by many of his peers. He had signed off on the demolition work three weeks before the building's collapse into a Salvation Army store, which resulted in 6 deaths and 13 injuries.
"For us, you have to understand that there are now five investigations [into the collapse], but right here and right now, this man did nothing wrong," Gillison said. "The department did what it was supposed to do under the code as it existed at the time. We are proud of this department and its employees, period."
Wagenhoffer was reportedly despondent after the building's collapse, though he continued to work at his job all the way up until his apparent suicide yesterday. A heavy equipment operator with a lengthy rap sheet who was high on marijuana at the time is being brought to trial on six counts of involuntary manslaughter, among other charges.
"We strive to protect our citizens by enforcing the building codes. And that's what Ron did," Department of of Licenses and Inspections head Carlton Williams said. "He was a dedicated civil servant who loved his job."
Philadelphia's District Attorney is planning to convene an investigative grand jury into the causes behind the collapse. Authorities say that Wagenhoffer was not being targeted by the investigation.
