‘Star Citizen’ Update Goes Live, Game Hits $100 Million Mark in Funding
"Star Citizen" is one of the most successful crowdfunded projects in history and the PC game continues to hit milestones in its run. Recently, the game marked two significant milestones back to back as it unveils the Alpha 2.0 update and reaches $100 million in funding since its launch in 2012.
In a statement on GameSpot, Star Citizens creator Chris Roberts spoke about the new update and how it takes the top-selling crowdfunded game to new height and excitement.
"Alpha 2.0 is a major breakthrough for Stars Citizen," Roberts said. "It represents the first true slice of gameplay that includes much of what Star Citizen will bring to our fans: thrilling space combat in a massive play area, first person battles, and multi-crew ships where you and your friends can adventure together in a portion of the universe on the same ship. It's all technology that has never been undertaken to this scale and depth before in our industry."
This new patch will bring a slew of impressive content from developer Cloud Imperium Games, including brand new locations to check out: Crusader planet, three moons, three space stations, one repair/restock station and nine comm arrays. There are also over 20 new encounters and flyable ships. Other new features include Extra Vehicular Activity, quantum travel and more.
The array of content in "Star Citizen" has satisfied the growing fanbase and undoubtedly played a huge part in catapulting the Kickstarter campaign to its unparalleled heights of success. The space simulator hit the $100 million mark, giving the team the funds they need for production as it continues the development of the game, according to a separate report from GameSpot.
"We are forever grateful for our backers and fans," Roberts said. "They've been there from the beginning when we launched Star Citizen's funding campaign three years ago. And they've helped create the most passionate and loyal community in our industry. They are helping us every step along the way in creating the best damn space sim ever."
Topping a hundred million dollars is a great achievement and a testament to the impressiveness of the "Star Citizen" PC game. Fortunately for the fans, the developers show no signs of slowing down in extending the expansive world of the space simulator. Along with the latest content, a campaign mode for the game is also in the works with a star-studded cast that includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis, Gillian Anderson and more.
