‘Fallout 4’ New Patch Analysis Reveals Performance Tweaks; PS4, Xbox One Versions Compared
"Fallout 4" is one of the biggest releases in 2015, but the effectivity of the patches will likely play a huge part in maintaining its success going forward. The recent update 1.02 brought several new features to light, but the performance improvements are as important to players on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
A new analysis by Digital Foundry on Eurogamer looked closely at the tweaked game, in particular, the technological improvements that addressed glaring issues and glitches in "Fallout 4" upon its release. While there are changes in both console, the analysis ultimately declared the PlayStation 4 version fared much better in the comparison against its Xbox One counterpart.
"The good news is PS4's improvements aren't limited to one targeted section, but rather, the game at large is now better optimised for Sony's machine," the report revealed. "In particular, any combat that puts a strain on PS4's memory bandwidth -- via the usual flurry of effects-work -- now gets a marked boost on patch 1.02."
While drops are still an issue, the PlayStation 4's upgraded version records a significant improvement compared to its performance upon the launch. Digital Foundry found out during testing that frame rates are now equal in the two consoles and in some cases in the Corvega section, the PlayStation 4 runs even more smoothly.
"Unfortunately, all signs point to Xbox One staying largely unmoved in its frame-rate delivery of Fallout 4, even with patch 1.02 installed," Digital Foundry said. "Tests between its launch day 1.01 and this update show few differences in the open world overall, many of which are lost within the margin of error. That said, one clear exception is in its handling of the Corvega factory, where previous drops to 25fps in the initial sewers area now resolve at 30fps on patch 1.02, albeit with a few minor drops."
The analysis added, "Outside of this factory though, Xbox One's gains on patch 1.02 are simply not as profound as those on PS4. The upshot of this is Sony's machine catches up in scenarios where it previously fell short; primarily when engaging in battle. As a result, there's a comprehensive frame-rate advantage on PS4 as it stands now, though it's fair to say some sore points linger on each console."
In other "Fallout 4" news, the Nuka-Cola Quantum is making a comeback on Target next week, according to a report from IGN. The best-seller can be purchased for $2.99 or free with the game or the Xbox Season Pass.
