Retirement is finally becoming a reality for one of the most popular television personalities in the world.

Barbara Walters, who looks much younger than her actual age of 84, announced on Monday that May 16 will be her last appearance as a daily television show host on The View. She will continue to be a part of the show as an executive producer and ABC plans to keep her around as a "lifelong member of ABC News," according to the company.

Walters launched The View in 1997 and over the years she has remained on the show while many other big-name celebrities, such as Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O'Donnell, have also served in key roles.

Many of Walters' colleagues and friends have expressed just how important she has been to the network and to The Walt Disney Company.

"In this business there are legends, there are icons, and then there is Barbara Walters," Robert A. Iger, the Chief Executive of The Walt Disney Company said, according to ABC. "She's a dear friend and colleague as well as someone I deeply admire, and it's impossible to fully convey her impact and influence on television. She broke barriers, defied convention, made history and set the standard for journalistic excellence for more than 50 years. It's hard to imagine television without her."

"Barbara Walters was one of the first people I met as an ABC page almost 38 years ago. She was fiercely intelligent, impressive and inspiring then, and remains so to this day," said Anne Sweeney, who serves as the co-chair for Disney Media Networks.
