Sony hasn't been safeguarding its trade secrets lately, thus fans of the Japan-based tech giant have a lot to speculate about for the past few weeks.

PhoneArena discovered earlier this month that Sony's upcoming Xperia Z6 line-up might comprise of five differently sized handsets. These are the four-inch Xperia Z6 mini, 4.6-inch Xperia Z6 Compact, 5.2-inch Xperia Z6, 5.8-inch Xperia Z6 Plus and a 6.4-inch phablet known as the Xperia Z6 Ultra. Rumor has it, four of these devices will carry Qualcomm's next-gen Snapdragon 820 chipset.

Now, there's a new rumor claiming that Sony will not drown customers with Xperias next year. Instead, the company is said to be focusing on just two flagship smartphones for the whole duration of 2016.

Per cnBeta, as translated by GforGames, Sony might introduce the first device in May, and then release it in June. The second device could be unveiled in September, just in time for IFA 2016, and become available a month after, in October. If cnBeta is to be believed, no Sony flagship will take the stage at CES 2016, happening in the second week of January.

The source indicated that both smartphones will be powered by Qualcomm's brand-new Snapdragon 820 chipset while also featuring metal back covers. That said, cnBeta claimed that the duo will sport 4K displays, like the one featured on the Xperia Z5 Premium.

If the rumor turns out to be true, the release schedule will fall perfectly in line with Sony's standard practice of outing two flagship devices each year.

The usual six-month cycle was going strong in 2014 but was stopped this year due to the company's whirlwind releases of the Xperia Z3 smartphones. Variations of the smartphone had little differences between them, like the Xperia Z3+ and Xperia Z4v.

As the case with most speculation and hearsay, this latest tip should be taken with a little grain of salt. We'll keep you posted on more rumors and details about Sony's Xperia line-up as soon as they arrive.

In the meantime, the Xperia Z5 series has been on the shelves for almost two months now.

The Xperia Z5 series consists of three devices. These are the Z5 Premium, Z5, and Z5 Compact. The trio boots Android 5.1.1 Lollipop straight out the box while having 32GB of native storage expandable up to 32GB via microSD slot. Both the Z5 premium and Z5 have 3GB of RAM while the Z5 Compact only has 2GB of RAM, as per DigitalTrends.

The Z5 Premium has a 5.5-inch IPS LCD screen, the Z5 has the same display type but in a smaller 5.2-inch screen while the Z5 Compact has the smallest screen size measuring 4.6 inches. Battery capacities for the trio are 3,430 mAh, 2,900 mAh and 2,700 mAh, respectively.
