Gina Rodriguez Responds to Golden Globe America Ferrera Mix Up: 'Who Cares?'
Gina Rodriguez had nothing but love for fellow Latina America Ferrera after learning that their names had been confused on Twitter during the Golden Globe nominations announcement on Dec. 10.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Rodriguez didn't even know she has been confused with Ferrera and thought of it as no big deal. In fact, she was quite honored to be mistaken for the "Superstore" actress.
"I didn't hear anything until recently. Someone sent me an article, but who cares?" said Rodriguez. "America's lovely. She's so beautiful and such a fantastic actress. If there's anybody I want to get mixed up with, it's her for sure."
Rodriguez's admiration perhaps comes from the fact that Ferrera made history in 2007 when she became the first Latina to win Best Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy, at the Golden Globes. The Honduran-American actress won for her role of Betty Suarez in "Ugly Betty."
Rodriguez was the recipient of that very same award at the 2015 Golden Globes for her role of Jane Villanueva in "Jane the Virgin."
The 31-year-old could soon make history herself. She was once again nominated for the same award and could be the only Latina to win the award twice.
Hearing her name called for a second time when the Best Television Actress nomination was announced was definitely an emotional experience for the Puerto Rican-American star.
"The Hollywood Foreign Press Association changed my life last year, like entirely," she explained. "I don't feel like I could have ever have asked for any more. So this morning, when I heard my name called, I fell to the kitchen floor and started crying."
While the mix up was surprising, this is actually not first time that a major award show has confused two Latinas on social media, reported Fox News Latino.
In a photo taken backstage during the Academy Awards in 2014, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences confused Spanish actress Penelope Cruz with Mexican star Salma Hayek.
