Mexico Soccer Schedule: El Tri to Face Senegal in February Before FIFA World Cup Qualifiers
It's been an incredible year for the Mexican National Team. They made an appearance at the Copa America in Chile, and then they won the championship at the Gold Cup this past summer. Mexico's Gold Cup title win over Jamaica was their seventh continental championship, the most by any CONCACAF country.
Mexico also defeated the United States back in October in a thrilling overtime game to punch their ticket in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. Yes, it's been a memorable year for Mexico soccer, but their fans won't get to watch their national team play again until Feb. 10, 2016.
According to recent reports, Mexico will play Senegal on that date in an international friendly in Miami, Florida. That's a pretty interesting matchup considering Mexico and Senegal have only faced each other one time, back in 2010 in a friendly which they won 1-0. We also haven't seen Mexico face a CAF squad since they played Cameroon at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
At the moment Mexico is ranked No. 22 in the world and No. 1 in CONCACAF.
This is clearly a "warm up" game for what is to come. In March, Mexico will be participating in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, a tournament they are already 2-0. Mexico, who is in Group A, beat El Salvador 3-0 in their first qualifier and then followed that up by defeating Honduras, 2-0. Their next scheduled qualifier game will be against Canada on March 25 in Vancouver. Mexico will be the resounding favorites, but playing in the cool Canadian outdoors may give Mexico some issues.
Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez has been playing the best soccer of his career for both club and country. Bayer Leverkusen got a steal. Hernandez is also just four goals away from tying Jared Borgetti for the most goals in Mexico team history. Midfielder Andres Guardado had himself an incredible Gold Cup as well filling a huge void for a then injured Hernandez.
Mexico's best players are not guaranteed to be on the field against Senegal however. The reason for this is because this event is not FIFA sponsored. That means that many of Mexico's players who play on European based teams (like Hernandez) may not be available if they have a club game scheduled.
