New York Yankees News: Joe Girardi Concerned About Rotation, Limiting Luis Severino's Innings?
The New York Yankees had a good offseason, finally addressing the second baseman position, but general manager Brian Cashman admitted that the rotation is still a major concern. Manager Joe Girardi agrees with him, especially for all their starting pitchers except Luis Severino, who made a trip in the disabled list.
"I think there is concern because of health. When you think about Masahiro Tanaka, coming off an injury, you think about Nathan Eovaldi coming off an injury, CC Sabathia with a knee he's had to deal with. Michael Pineda that was the most innings he threw after substantial periods of time. So there is some concern," Girardi told NJ Advance Media Group.
Tanaka underwent elbow surgery last October to remove a bone spur but is expected to be ready by spring training, per the New York Post. He also missed about five weeks last season due to tendinitis in his right wrist and right forearm strain.
The Japanese ace also missed more than two months in the 2014 rookie season because of a small tear in his right ulnar collateral ligament, where he was recommended to have Tommy John Surgery. However, he chose to rehab his injury that caused some concern, especially because he was signed for around $175 million.
Eovaldi had a good first season in New York, going 14-2 despite a 4.20 ERA and went 8-0 from June 20 to Aug. 24 with a 2.93 ERA before experiencing elbow inflammation that caused him to miss the rest of the season. He received platelet-rich plasma shots to reduce the swelling and underwent two weeks of rest and two weeks of throwing exercises to keep him healthy.
Sabathia has been having knee problems in the past two years, undergoing two surgeries and having the knee drained during the regular season. He is getting comfortable wearing a knee brace as he posted a 2-1 record with an impressive 2.17 ERA in his last five starts in September.
His knee is not only the problem as he spent the entire month of October inside a rehab facility for alcohol addiction. Pineda also went down with a forearm strain and was never the same after a great start to the season while Ivan Nova is just entering his first full season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery.
The Yankees still have 21-year-old Severino who went 5-3 with a 2.89 ERA since making his debut in August. Girardi noted that the team will be careful in handling his first full season in the majors and is discussing with Cashman about an innings limit.
"We'll have to watch him because the rigors of a big league season is different than a minor league season because it's longer, but I don't expect a huge limit on him," Girardi told MLB.com.
