‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Box Office Results: Movie Grosses $120 Million in One Day, Shatters Records
There was no doubt that the force was going to be strong with this one, but "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has shattered all single day records and exceeded the industry analysts expectations.
According to Box Office Mojo, the franchise came back with a hefty return on the Thursday night preview, hauling about $57 million in its pre-premiere slot. That added to the grand total of about $120.5 million on its opening day Friday, obliterating the previous single day record of $91 million set by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows - Part 2."
"The Force Awakens" was expected to break some records, but not quite so dramatically with the Friday domestic haul. The next record that is set to be broken is the opening weekend record, which was set earlier this year by "Jurassic World." "JW" raked in $208 million on its opening, narrowly breaking "The Avengers" record of $207 million before it.
B.O.M. broke down the stats and trends for the final days of the weekend and, compared to the percentage drop offs from Friday hauls to the Saturday and Sunday comparison, the stats say that "Star Wars" will land somewhere between $225 and $240 million after the final bell sounds on Sunday evening.
As already stated, the film was expected to break those previous records, but not by such a gigantic margin. This unprecendented success at the box office comes on the heels of solid preview scores and excellent reviews from critics and review aggregators.
Among the categories with records already broken as of the time this article was written, the film has managed to take the title in the following: Largest Thursday Previews, Largest Friday, Opening Day, Single Day, December Single Day, Widest December Opening, December Opening Weekend and Fastest to $100 Million.
To help put these numbers into perspective, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" made more in one single day than "The Wolf of Wall Street" did during its entire run at U.S. theaters, which was $116.9 Million.
