US Marshals Offer $5,000 Reward for 'Affluenza Teen' Ethan Couch
U.S. Marshals are now offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the whereabouts of "affluenza teen" Ethan Couch.
According to the Chicago Tribune, 18-year-old Couch disappeared from his Texas home earlier this month after a video surfaced of him apparently participating in a game of beer bong, in stark violation of his probation.
Couch first became a household name in 2013 when he avoided jail time for a DUI manslaughter conviction that left four people dead. During the proceedings, his attorneys successfully argued that his privileged upbringing kept him from knowing right from wrong.
The teen's family is reported to be worth millions, largely stemming from their wildly lucrative sheet metal business. Authorities now fear Couch may have used some of those riches to flee the country and avoid penalties for violating the terms of his release.
Back in 2013, Couch was sentenced to 10 years of probation. He failed to appear at a Dec. 11 hearing earlier this month after the video now in question first became public.
"Every person who carries a badge in the United States of America is aware he's a fugitive," said Terry Grisham, a spokesman for the Tarrant County sheriff's office.
"You can run, but you're always going to be looking over your shoulder. We're not going to give up. We're going to come after you. We're going to find you, wherever you are," he added.
Couch's mother also disappeared about the same time as her son, and authorities have now officially declared her a missing person. When authorities visited the home the two shared, they found only a pinball machine inside.
A wanted poster released by the U.S. Marshals described Couch as a 5-foot-7, 130-pound teenager with strawberry blond hair, green eyes and a back tattoo.
"With the wealth and the wherewithal that his family has, it's going to be a tough assignment for us to find him," Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson said.
On the night of the crash, Couch was found to have a blood-alcohol level that was three times the adult driving limit, and there were also traces of Valium and marijuana in his system.
