Boxing News: Billy Joe Saunders Eyeing Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez Fights
Billy Joe Saunders is eyeing big fights after successfully capturing the World Boxing Organization middleweight title via a majority decision win against Andy Lee on Saturday in United Kingdom.
Saunders, who improved his record to 23-0 with 12 knockout victories, is eyeing fights against reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and former champion Miguel Cotto. The unbeaten champion feels he deserves a shot against big-named fighters now that he is a world champion.
"Cotto, Canelo those are the types of fight I want now," Saunders said via Boxing News Online. "I've arrived at a new level. I know I need to stay on form if I want to perform at this level."
Alvarez, who defeated Cotto in their huge fight in November, might not be available to face Saunders anytime soon, as he is expected to take a light title defense in preparation for his mandatory defense against unbeaten middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
Promoter Frank Warren confirmed that Alvarez is on top of their wish list, but they are also eager to collide with Cotto. Warren believes Saunders is capable of beating the Puerto Rican boxing icon.
"Billy wants the Canelo fight and it's something to think about. I've got to be honest. I don't think that would be a difficult fight to make. But it's something I want to think about," Warren said via The Telegraph. "For me, if we could make Cotto the next fight, we'd do it in a heartbeat. He'd beat Cotto."
But aside from the big fights against Alvarez and Cotto, Saunders and his camp are not ruling out a rematch with Lee. Saunders said that the former champion deserves a rematch because of how close the fight was and added that the second fight could be staged in a venue bigger than the Manchester Arena.
Saunders is also being linked to a rematch with Chris Eubank Jr. However, Saunders is not too interested in the showdown, as he pointed out that the Eubank, who took a split decision loss during their first fight in November 2014, had the chance to redeem himself, but the negotiation for the fight did not come to fruition.
"I'm the world champion now, I've got the say," Saunders added. "The Eubanks are so difficult to work with. I'm the world champion now and I'll decide who I fight. I'll have Christmas off but then I'm on to bigger and better things. If the Eubank fight comes, it's got to be for a lot of money but it's on my rules."
