It may be two years away, but Chris Pine has shared some thoughts on his upcoming role in "Wonder Woman."

The "Star Trek" actor, who is slated to play Steve Trevor, Wonder Woman's main love interest, is excited about being a side kick in a female driven film.

"It'll be a [big] blast. I couldn't be happier to be supporting Gal [Gadot] in what's going to be the first female-driven superhero film," he told Total Film in a recent interview. "I think in the world today we've had plenty enough of male-driven everything. It's finally time to see how wonderful the world can be with beautiful, strong intelligent women [in charge]."

Indeed "Wonder Woman" marks the first major female superhero film made by a big studio in years and the first for DC Comics. In the early 2000s, studios attempted to make female-driven superhero films, but all the movies flopped.

Some examples included "Elektra," "Catwoman" and "Aeon Flux." While the films starred some of the most popular Hollywood starlets, all three films were critical disasters and flopped at the box office. In the end, studios decided against making female-driven superhero films.

Marvel has made numerous films featuring female superheroes since 2008, and while Scarlett Witch and Black Widow are part of the "Avengers" films, these two characters have not received standalone movies.

Marvel is expected to change this, as the studio is working on a "Captain Marvel" film. That movie is also expected for 2017, but no casting has actually been done.

"Wonder Woman" will star Gadot and is expected to take place over a number of different time periods. The movie will also star Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston and Elena Anaya. Patty Jenkins will helm the film.

"Wonder Woman" is slated to hit theaters June 23, 2017.
