Now that she's 21, Come and Get It singer Selena Gomez is taking matters into her own hands and claiming her independence... beginning with firing her parents.

Although the news comes as a shock to us, E! News reports that the plan to fire her parents has been "...going on for awhile" now, and it "...didn't just happen yesterday." Gomez reportedly made the split official last month.

Gomez's parents are mom Mandy and stepdad Brian Teefey, who have been managing Selena since her Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place days. Despite Selena's successful career thus far, she's decided that ending her working relationship with her folks is the best move.

So what caused the brunette beauty to call it quits with her mom and stepdad?

Well, according to TMZ, Selena feels that she has outgrown her parents and believes she's old enough and famous enough to have a seasoned professional manager with other A-list clients. Currently, Gomez reportedly has her sights set on fellow pop star Katy Perry's manager, Bradford Cobb.

Although Gomez's parents were not too happy with their daughters decision at first, a source told E! News that "everything is fine now," and "they're all good."

Rumors also claim that the split could also stem from her parents' disapproval of her dramatic on-again off-again relationship with Justin Bieber.

Although it's not clear whether or not that particular rumor is true, this isn't the first time a celebrity has flown away from the parental nest in pursuit of independence and a bigger career. In 2011, Beyoncé fired her father Matthew Knowles after 14 years of having a working relationship with him. Although it wasn't an amicable split, Knowles has never looked back, and her career continues to take off as an international superstar. Other celebrities that have 'broken up' with their parents include Macaulay Culkin, Michael Jackson, Usher, Scarlett Johansson, and LeAnn Rimes... just to name a few.
