All state and federal facilities are closed on Friday in observance of the Christmas holiday, but that hardly means your entire town will be dark.

Most gas stations will be open, and the state's public transportation systems, both NJ Transit and Path, will be operating, NJ.com reports Nationally, chains like Family Dollar, CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens are all open for business, and, for the most part, operate with normal hours.

Along with such government agencies as the U.S. Post Office and all public libraries, among the major businesses taking the day off are UPS and FedEx, as well as such major food chains as Shop & Stop, ShopRite, Whole Foods, Giant, Wegmans, Kroger and Kings. All the operations are expecting to reopen at 9 a.m. sharp Saturday morning, with some of them planning to operate for extended hours that day.

Meanwhile, other large-scale retailers such as Walmart, Target and Publix are all closed on Friday and will resume operations on Saturday. Ditto for such outlets as Dunkin Donuts and Baskin Robbins, while operations for such fast food chains as McDonald's, Subway, Waffle House and IHOP vary based on location. Most Denny's and BJ's Buffets are open.

As for Christmas day, the New York Daily News reports all Department of Motor Vehicles offices are also closed, along with all other government run facilities.

Trash services are also suspended for the day, and city officials are advising residents to refrain from putting out trash until later in the day. In New York, public transportation systems are operating on a reduced Sunday schedule.

Drivers will catch a break, as most parking regulations are also suspended, including all parking meter rules. Alternate side parking rules are also suspended for the day.
