Michael Fassbender has had quite a year, with three films underperforming. However, that does not seem like it will continue next year, when the highly anticipated "Assassin's Creed" opens in December.

Fox has released the first still from the film via Entertainment Weekly, showing Fassbender and Ariane Labed in period attire. The new film is based on the popular video game franchise of the same name, which has been acclaimed for many years and has won multiple awards.

In preparation for the film, Fassbender said in the accompanying Entertainment Weekly interview that he played the game for months, really immersing himself in the fictional world.

The new film reunites Fassbender with director Justin Kurzel and actress Marion Cotillard. The three worked on the critically acclaimed "Macbeth," which is currently in theaters.

"Assassin's Creed" recently began shooting in Malta, London and Spain. It is set to be produced by Frank Marshall, Arnon Milchan, Jean-Julien Baronnet, Conor McCaughan, Fassbender and Pat Crowley. Ubisoft Motion Pictures is developing the project and is producing with New Regency.

Fassbender is an Academy Award-nominated actor, who is best known for his work on "Shame," "12 years a Slave" and "Hunger." He recently starred in "Steve Jobs" and is currently nominated for the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild award. He also starred in "Slow West" and has played the role of Magneto in "X-Men: First Class," "X-men: Days of Future Past" and the upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse."

Cotillard is an Academy Award-winning actress, who won in 2007 for "La Vie en Rose" and was also nominated for her work on "Two Days One Night." She has also starred in "Inception," "Nine," "Rust and Bone," "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Immigrant."

"Assassin's Creed" also stars Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Irons, Carlos Bardem and Michael K. Williams. It hits theaters Dec. 21, 2016.
