Famed comedian Bill Cosby was arraigned at a Pennsylvania courthouse Wednesday on sexual assault charges in a decade-old case.

CNN reports the 78-year-old celebrity appeared in a brief court session, where he pled not guilty to the charges against him. After being booked, Cosby quickly posted his $1 million bail and left.

This is the latest development in the massive controversy involving the formerly revered sitcom actor and comic. Nearly 60 women have come forward in just the last year, all claiming to have been drugged or sexually assaulted by Cosby in the past. However, this is the first time criminal charges have officially been brought against the accused.

Cosby arrived at the courthouse wielding a cane, and he was assisted into the building. His lawyers say recent health issues have left the comedian nearly blind. Still, he seemed to maintain a smile and a jovial attitude.

According to USA Today, the official charge against Cosby is second-degree aggravated assault. Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Kevin R. Steele said it concerned an act of "penetration" against the alleged victim, former Temple University basketball coach Andrea Constand.

"Pills were provided. Wine was provided. The victim was frozen, paralyzed," Steele said. "A person in that condition is not able to give consent."

Although Cosby has faced dozens of similar allegations in the last year or so, Constand's stands out as one of the few cases that didn't exceed the statute of limitations. The victim attempted to report Cosby shortly after the 2004 incident, but prosecutors passed on a criminal case, forcing her to file a civil lawsuit and eventually settle out of court with the comedian.

Attorney Gloria Allred said the arraignment was a great victory for many of Cosby's alleged victims, calling it the "best Christmas present" her clients have received.

Alleged victim and former Playboy playmate Victoria Valentino celebrated the news.

"I can't wait to get together with all the ladies for a celebration party and crack open the champagne," she said to ABC.

Valentino claimed she was drugged and raped by Cosby in 1969, shortly after the death of her young son. She said she and the other victims fully support Constand.

"Justice has to prevail," Valentino said. "If Andrea's case winds up getting the full justice that she deserves, then we are there for her and we would be in court -- we would be in court even if we weren't testifying; we'd be there in the grand stands rooting her on, lending positive vibes and love to her."
