‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Just 1 Day Away From Beating ‘Unbreakable’ Record Set by ‘Avatar’
In what was originally deemed to be "unbreakable" for many years to come, the 2009 "Avatar" domestic box office record of $760 million is about to be crushed by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
According to Box Office Mojo, conservative estimates by Disney of this New Years weekend's box office haul puts "The Force Awakens" at around $88.3 million. This puts the total domestic haul for the film at $740 million, which passed one of James Cameron's powerhouse films, "Titanic" ($658 million). But it is still $20 million shy of Cameron's other juggernaut, "Avatar" ($760 million).
Now that "The Force Awakens" has straddled the horizon of the record holder, it is a mere one day away (possibly today) from breaking the record, judging by its daily performance on weekdays. It could potentially break the record on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
As a matter of fact, there is a real possibility that the film could be the first in the history of the U.S. to reach $1 billion within the country, which has never even been dreamed of until now.
For more perspective on this monumental achievement, the second highest grossing "Star Wars" film was "The Phantom Menace" (1999) at $474 million followed by the original "Star Wars" (1977) at $460 million. But both of those films gained a large share of those domestic grosses over the years with re-releases.
Want even more proof that this film is the biggest ever? How about the fact that it took 72 days for "Avatar" to cross $700 million. "The Force Awakens" has crossed that threshold in 16 days. There is also reason to believe that Disney went to conservative with their weekend estimate for the film, and it could end up with an official number around $91 million.
When the numbers are adjusted for inflation, "Avatar" scores around the $837 million mark. There is enough reason to believe that "The Force Awakens" will also pass that mark as well, officially making it the all-time undisputed champion.
